Overview
Taiwan, officially known as the Republic of China (ROC), is a sovereign state in East Asia. Taiwan has a rich cultural heritage that is heavily influenced by its history and location. The island was first inhabited by Austronesian-speaking tribes, who were later displaced by Han Chinese settlers. During the 20th century, Taiwan was under Japanese rule from 1895 to 1945 and was then occupied by the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) after World War II. The KMT established a government in Taiwan and ruled the country until the 1990s, when democratic reforms were introduced.
